ChatGPT Ads is live in Shopify for UK merchants from 23 September 2026. Our view on who should test it, how to run a first campaign and who should wait.
From today, 23 September 2026, UK Shopify merchants can install the ChatGPT Ads for Shopify app, sync their catalogue and launch product ads inside ChatGPT without leaving Shopify admin. The app has been live for US stores since 16 September; OpenAI’s launch post confirmed the international rollout date for every market where ChatGPT Ads already operates, and the UK has been one of those markets since June.
Most of what has been written about this so far repeats the announcement. This is our view on whether a UK ecommerce brand should actually spend money on it yet, and how to run a first test that tells you something useful.
The short version: it is worth a small, deliberate test if you have healthy margins, a clean catalogue and first-party measurement already in place. It is not worth touching if any of those three are missing.
What actually launched
OpenAI announced four things together on 16 September. Only two of them matter to a UK merchant this week.
| What | What it does | UK status |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Ads for Shopify app | Connects your catalogue and commerce events to Ads Manager; create and run campaigns from Shopify | Available from 23 September |
| ChatGPT Ads in HubSpot | Connect an ads account, build ads and follow up leads inside HubSpot | Available now |
| AI campaign tools | Natural-language campaign creation via the Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work; suggested copy and imagery; opt-in text customisation and translation | Rolling out |
| Sponsored Agents | After clicking an ad, a user can open a labelled conversation with a brand-sponsored agent | US only, selected advertisers |
The Shopify app is the one to pay attention to. Sponsored Agents are the more interesting product, but they are a US test with hand-picked advertisers and there is no UK date. Do not plan around them yet.
How the Shopify integration works
OpenAI’s setup guide is short, and the mechanics are familiar if you have connected Shopify to Google or Meta before.
You install the app, connect or create an Ads Manager account, and connect the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify. The app then syncs your product catalogue into a ChatGPT Ads product feed and passes eligible commerce events back to Ads Manager for optimisation and reporting. Campaign creation in Shopify asks for a name, budget, optimisation event and targeting, then lets you choose between all products, a single product or a website ad.
Three details from the documentation are worth knowing before you start:
- Self-service access depends on where the billed legal entity is based. The UK is on the approved list, so a UK-registered business can use it directly.
- Budgets set inside Shopify move in fixed $25 increments. Ads Manager itself allows any amount, so if you want tighter control over a small test, set the budget there.
- Shopify’s Analytics tab shows top-line results; detailed performance lives in Ads Manager. Expect to work in both.
The app is available to all Shopify plans, not just Plus.
Where we think this channel fits
This is the part most coverage skips, so we will be direct about our position.
It is a discovery channel, not a Google Shopping replacement
Someone searching “men’s waterproof walking boots size 10” on Google has told you almost everything about their intent. Someone asking ChatGPT to plan a three-day walk in the Cairngorms has told you something more useful and much earlier. An ad for boots is relevant, but the person is further from a purchase.
Our expectation is that ChatGPT Ads will behave more like Meta or YouTube than like paid search: broader reach, longer consideration, weaker last-click attribution. Judge it on assisted conversions and new-customer rate over a fixed window, not on the ROAS figure you would demand from Shopping.
Your catalogue is now your creative
In a conversational surface, the model chooses which of your products fits the conversation and how to present it. That decision draws on your product data. Vague titles, missing attributes and thin descriptions will not just hurt relevance; they will decide whether you appear at all.
If you have been putting off feed hygiene because Google Shopping “works anyway”, this is the reason to do it. Clear product titles, complete attributes, honest descriptions and current stock status are the first optimisation lever, ahead of anything in the bidding interface.
Measurement will be the hard part
You will have a pixel, a Shopify Analytics view and an Ads Manager view, and they will not agree. That is normal for a new platform. The mistake is to pick the most flattering number.
Our recommendation is to treat Ads Manager as the platform’s claim and your own data as the verdict. Confirm the pixel is firing on purchase before spending a pound. Add clear UTM parameters at campaign level so the traffic is identifiable in GA4. If you run HubSpot or Klaviyo, tag first-purchase customers acquired through ChatGPT so you can look at repeat behaviour in 90 days, which is the test that actually matters for a discovery channel.
A first test worth running
This is the shape we would give a four-week trial for a UK brand that meets the entry criteria.
- Pick two or three hero products, not the whole catalogue. Choose items with strong margin, clear differentiation and a landing page that already converts. All-products campaigns are fine later; they make an early read impossible.
- Fix their product data first. Titles, attributes, imagery and descriptions should be the best in your catalogue before the feed syncs.
- Set the budget in Ads Manager at a level you can lose without it mattering, and hold it steady for the full period. Changing budget mid-test resets your read.
- Optimise for purchase from day one if the pixel is verified. If it is not, do not launch; fix the pixel.
- Define the success measure before launch. We would use new-customer revenue at a blended CAC ceiling, checked in GA4 rather than only in Ads Manager.
- Watch overlap. If ChatGPT Ads spend goes up and branded search, Meta or direct conversions rise with it, note it. If Shopping conversions fall, note that too. The channel’s true value sits in that movement.
At the end of four weeks you will have a defensible view on cost per new customer, an early signal on repeat rate and a clear sense of whether the model is surfacing your products in the right conversations. That is enough to decide on a second, larger test.
Who should wait
Be honest about whether you fit before you install anything.
Low average order values and thin margins do not survive a discovery channel with long consideration windows. A catalogue with inconsistent product data will underperform for reasons that have nothing to do with the platform. A store with no working first-party measurement will not be able to tell whether the test worked, which is worse than not running it.
In each of those cases, the money is better spent fixing the underlying problem. That work pays off on every channel, including this one when you come back to it.
Prepare for Sponsored Agents now
Sponsored Agents are not in the UK, but the direction is obvious. When a shopper can ask your brand questions inside ChatGPT, the answers will come from the material you have made available. Sizing guides, care instructions, delivery and returns policy, compatibility notes and honest comparisons will become the substance of the conversation.
That is the same content that earns citations in AI Overviews and improves organic visibility today. Investing in it now means you are ready when the format arrives, and you benefit in the meantime.
Questions we get asked
Is ChatGPT Ads available in the UK?
Yes. ChatGPT Ads went live in the UK in June 2026, the first market outside the US, and self-service Ads Manager is open to UK-based advertisers. From 23 September the Shopify app is available to UK merchants as well.
Who sees the ads?
Logged-in adults on the free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions do not include ads. Ads are matched to the current conversation, shown beneath the answer, and are not eligible near sensitive topics such as health or politics. OpenAI’s published ads principles set this out, and it may change as the platform matures.
Does advertising affect whether ChatGPT recommends us organically?
OpenAI states that sponsored content is labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s own answers. Treat paid and organic visibility in ChatGPT as two different pieces of work.
Do we need Shopify Plus?
No. The app is available to Shopify customers on any plan in supported markets.
How much should we budget for a test?
Enough to reach statistical confidence on your hero products and not a pound more. For most UK brands that is a few hundred pounds a week for four weeks. If that figure would hurt, wait.
Deciding whether it belongs in your mix
We manage paid acquisition for UK ecommerce brands across search, social and marketplaces, and we would rather help you run one honest test than a dozen unmeasured ones. If you want a second opinion on whether ChatGPT Ads deserves a place in your paid media plan, or help getting the measurement right first, we would be glad to talk it through.
