Choosing a PPC agency in Edinburgh? The questions to ask, what PPC management costs, how to check tracking, and what the first 90 days should bring.
If you're an Edinburgh business looking for help with Google Ads, the shortlist comes together quickly. There are agencies with offices in the city, national agencies with Edinburgh pages, and freelancers who've managed accounts for years. The address matters less than you'd think. What decides whether the spend pays back is who manages the account, how conversions are tracked, and whether the plan fits how your customers in and around the city search.
I lead paid media at Clear Click for clients in Scotland and across the UK. We're registered in Edinburgh and remote-first, so I have a view on when location matters, and I'll say where it comes from.
This guide covers what to sort out before you speak to anyone, the questions that tell you most about an agency, what PPC management costs in Edinburgh, and what the first ninety days should bring.
What should you sort out before you contact an agency?
Three things. They'll save you, and every agency on your list, a meeting.
A target. "More leads" is a hope. "Thirty qualified enquiries a month at under £80 each" is a brief. If you sell online, use revenue and return on ad spend instead.
Two budgets, kept separate. The media budget goes to Google; the management fee goes to the agency. If your media budget is small, a £1,500 fee can become a large share of the total. At that ratio it's usually better to grow the media budget first, or to take a lighter advisory arrangement until spend justifies full management.
Access. Make sure you own your Google Ads account, Google Analytics and Tag Manager, with admin access in your own name. If a previous supplier set them up, check now rather than in the middle of a handover.
Does a PPC agency need to be based in Edinburgh?
For the work itself, no. Google Ads is managed in the same interface wherever the manager sits. What local knowledge changes is the plan: which areas to target, when demand peaks, and what customers in different parts of the city expect.
Edinburgh has a few patterns worth knowing. August brings the festivals, which lift demand and competition sharply for hospitality, events and short stays, and can make year-on-year comparisons misleading. Many businesses serve the Lothians and Fife as much as the city itself, so location targeting should follow where customers really are rather than a tidy radius. And because of tourism, plenty of searches for Edinburgh come from people who aren't here yet, which matters if you sell to visitors.
A good agency will ask about these things on the first call, wherever it's based. That's a better test than the postcode.
Which questions tell you most about a PPC agency?
Ask every agency on your shortlist the same five questions. A good answer is specific; a less helpful one stays general.
Who will manage the account day to day?
A good answer names the person, their experience and roughly how many accounts they run. It's normal for the pitch team and the delivery team to differ. You just want to know who does the work, and how often a senior person looks at it.
How will you track conversions?
This is the one I'd weight most. A good answer covers form submissions, calls and, where possible, what happened to each lead afterwards in your CRM. We once worked with a client whose contact form had been failing silently between the website and their IT systems, so enquiries were going missing and real fees went with them. No bidding strategy fixes that. Tracking gets checked before spend goes up.
What will you do in the first ninety days?
Look for an audit of the existing account, tracking fixes, a restructure if one is needed, and a written testing plan. Promises of guaranteed results in month one deserve a follow-up question, because the account needs data before anyone can forecast with confidence.
What does the fee include?
Search, Shopping, Performance Max, paid social, landing page advice and reporting can all sit inside or outside a fee. Ask what's in scope, what's quoted separately, and how changes to scope are agreed.
What happens if we part ways?
You keep the account, the data and the history. The answer should be yes, without hesitation, and it should be in the contract.
How much does a PPC agency cost in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh prices sit in line with the rest of the UK. Professional management typically starts around £1,500 a month, mid-market accounts run from £2,500 to £6,000, and agencies charging a percentage of spend usually take 10 to 20 per cent, often on a sliding scale. We've set out the models in detail in how much a PPC agency costs in the UK.
Our own PPC management starts from £1,500 a month plus VAT. If you're weighing an agency against a freelancer or your own hire, our comparison of in-house, freelance and agency PPC management goes through what each one costs once you include tools and management time.
What does good PPC management look like after the first month?
By the end of the first quarter, you should be able to see three things.
- Clean data. Conversions you trust, duplicates and junk removed, and a report that shows spend, fee and results in one view.
- A clear structure. Campaigns grouped by what customers want, so budget goes where intent is highest and you can see what each service or product line costs to win.
- Tests with a point. Each change has a reason and a result, and both are written down.
Month two feeling slow is normal. The early weeks often go on fixing what the account couldn't see, and the improvement tends to show once the data is right. If you're three months in and still can't see the three things above, that's the moment for a frank conversation with your agency, and most good agencies will welcome it.
Should PPC and SEO sit with the same agency?
Not necessarily, but they should work from the same plan. When paid and organic are run separately, it's common to find the business paying for clicks on searches where it already ranks first organically, while other valuable searches get neither channel's attention.
A simple test is to ask any PPC agency how they'd use your organic data. A good answer mentions checking which paid keywords you already rank well for, testing whether pulling back spend there loses any sales, and moving that budget to searches where organic can't reach yet. If your SEO sits with another supplier, it helps to put the two in touch early and agree one shared keyword list.
Partner badges come up at this stage too. Google Partner status shows an agency meets Google's spend and certification requirements, which is a useful baseline. It won't tell you who manages your account or how they measure success, so treat it as a starting point for the questions above.
What did this look like for Commonwork Bore Place?
Bore Place, run by the sustainability charity Commonwork, holds a Google Ad Grant, the free search advertising Google gives eligible charities. When we started, they were using about 10% of it. We restructured the account around what people were looking for (education visits, wedding hire, volunteering), set up tracking for newsletter sign-ups, brochure downloads and donations, and scaled activity to use the full grant.
Grant usage went from 10% to 100%, newsletter sign-ups from paid traffic rose 340%, and wedding brochure downloads rose 180%. It's a charity account, but the sequence is the one we use for every client: tracking first, structure second, scale third. The Bore Place case study has the detail.

Questions we get asked
How do I choose a PPC agency in Edinburgh?
Set a target and a budget first, then ask each agency who will run the account, how they'll track conversions and what the first ninety days involve. Check that you'll own the account and data. The agency that gives the most specific answers is usually the right one, wherever it's based.
What does a PPC specialist in Edinburgh cost?
Professional PPC management in Edinburgh typically starts around £1,500 a month, with mid-market accounts between £2,500 and £6,000. Percentage-of-spend agencies usually charge 10 to 20 per cent. That's on top of what you spend with Google.
What is the best PPC agency in Edinburgh?
The best agency for you is the one whose people, tracking and plan fit your target and budget, and that varies by business. Rather than relying on a ranked list, ask your shortlist the five questions above and compare the answers side by side. A second opinion on your current account is also a useful way to see how an agency thinks.
Should I use a PPC freelancer or an agency?
A freelancer can be excellent value for a single-channel account with steady spend. An agency or consultancy makes more sense when you need several channels, proper tracking and reporting built, or cover when someone's away. Our in-house, freelance and agency comparison sets out the costs of each.
Should I own my Google Ads account?
Yes. The account, its history and your conversion data should be in your name, with the agency given access as a manager. That way you keep everything if you ever change supplier.
How long does PPC take to show results?
Ads can bring traffic on day one, but a well-run account usually takes two to three months to settle, because tracking fixes and testing need data. Expect clearer returns by the end of the first quarter.
