What a proper SEO audit includes and what it costs in the UK, and how to tell a real audit from a crawler export with a cover page on it.

In the UK, a meaningful SEO audit tends to cost between £3,000 and £8,000, with larger sites, ecommerce catalogues and multi-market businesses above that. Under about £500 you are almost always buying a tool export with a cover page, because the value of an audit is the senior judgement applied to the findings, and judgement takes hours that cheap audits cannot fund. Here is what a proper audit includes, what moves the price, and how to tell the difference before you pay.

What does a proper SEO audit include?

A complete audit covers five layers, in sequence, because the answers from each change what matters in the next.

  • Technical and crawl. Can search engines access, render and index the site, and are they spending their crawl on the pages that matter? On large sites this is where the biggest silent losses live.
  • Architecture and internal linking. Does the site structure mirror how buyers search, and does authority flow to the pages that make money? Orphaned commercial pages are one of the most common findings we see.
  • Demand mapping. What the market actually searches, mapped against the pages that exist. This is where an audit stops being a health check and becomes a growth document: gaps become the content plan, and overlaps become the cannibalisation fix list.
  • Content and on-page. Whether the pages that should rank deserve to, judged against what currently outranks them rather than against a checklist.
  • Authority and AI readiness. The link and trust profile against the competitors who hold your target positions, and whether the site is structured for AI assistants and Google's AI results as well as classic listings.

The deliverable that matters is not the findings, it is the prioritised plan: what to fix first, what fixing it is worth, and what to ignore. If the document does not tell you that, it is a report, not an audit. We wrote up the narrower technical version in technical SEO audit services and the ecommerce version, with its six-stage sequence, in our ecommerce SEO audit framework.

What does an SEO audit cost in the UK?

The honest ranges, consistent with what we set out in what SEO costs in the UK:

  • Around £3,000 to £8,000 for a meaningful audit of a typical business site, done by senior people, ending in a prioritised plan.
  • Above that for large ecommerce catalogues, multi-market sites and enterprise platforms, because the hours scale with the number of URLs, templates and markets that need examining.
  • Day-rate alternatives: senior UK consultants typically charge £400 to £900 per day, which suits a focused second opinion on a specific question rather than a full audit.

What moves the price is mostly scope and site complexity: URL count, platform, how many templates exist, whether international markets are involved, and whether the audit includes demand mapping and content review or stops at technical health.

Why cheap audits cost more than they save

At £99 or free, the economics only work one way: the audit is generated by a tool, lightly formatted, and used as a sales document for a retainer. Tool exports are not worthless, but they have two structural problems. They weight findings by what tools can measure rather than by revenue, so a missing meta description on a dead page scores alongside a category page that cannot rank. And they diagnose every site the same way, when the entire value of an audit is knowing which of the two hundred possible findings are the five that matter for yours.

The pattern we inherit most often: a business acts on a cheap audit for six months, fixes ninety small things, and the traffic line does not move, because none of the ninety were the constraint.

Audit first, or straight into a retainer?

Audit first, in almost every case. It prices the real work honestly, because after an audit both sides know whether the constraint is technical, content-led or authority-led, and those cost very different amounts to fix. It also tests the agency: a strong audit shows you exactly how they think before you commit to a year of working together. Our own engagements start this way as the first stage of the CLEAR Method, agreeing what growth is worth before anything is spent on chasing it.

Questions we get asked about SEO audits

How long does an SEO audit take?

Depends on the size of the site, but think weeks rather than days for anything worth paying for: time for a full crawl, demand research, and the analysis that turns findings into a sequenced plan. Same-day audits are tool exports by definition.

What should an SEO audit deliverable look like?

A prioritised list of fixes ranked by commercial impact, each with the reasoning attached, plus the supporting evidence. Page counts are not the measure. A tight document a team can start acting on Monday beats two hundred colour-coded rows.

Are free SEO audits worth taking?

They are lead generation, priced accordingly. Taking one costs nothing except the sales conversation attached, but treat the output as a tool export rather than as advice, because that is what it is.

Can I audit my own site?

Partly. The crawl tools are accessible and the mechanical checks are learnable. What is hard to self-supply is the comparative judgement: knowing what good looks like in your competitive set, and which findings carry revenue weight. A middle path that works well is a senior day-rate review of your own findings.

How often should we audit?

A full audit roughly annually, with lighter quarterly checks, because sites regress continuously: templates change, products retire, redirects break. Corrections are cheaper than recoveries.
